Science Café Film & Book Discussion Group

Fall 2024 will mark our 35th gathering of H-LSAMP students who love to read, talk about books and films, and explore ideas about life and science woven into compelling stories.

Science Café participants are expected to engage in this activity by paying careful attention to the details in the selected film or book, taking the time to learn about the science, history, and/or culture that informs the plot and themes and, importantly, actively contributing to group discussion.

We share dinner prior to our discussion, which we hope will not only stimulate appetites but also good conversation. A shared table builds community! That's why we call it Science Café!

David von Miller (H-LSAMP Director) and Dr. Greg Passty (Professor, Department of Mathematics) lead our seminar-style discussions by providing questions for a close reading of chosen books and guide our analysis and criticism of chosen films.  See our Fall 2024 Film choices below.

Dune part two

DUNE PART TWO - Following the fall of House Atreides in Dune: Part One (2021), exiled Duke Paul Atreides continues his journey of enlightenment in the barren deserts of Arrakis. Soon, the noble son embraces the ways of the blue-eyed Fremen warriors, unaware that rumours about the prophesied Dune Messiah divide the tribe. After all, the suffocating grip of House Harkonnen tightens by the minute, ushering in a brutal era of war over the control of the planet and its vast spice-rich fields. But above all else, water is life. As shrewd machinators plot destruction and death, the volatile future demands the emergence of a new leader. Now caught between personal hopes and the aspirations of others, will Paul become the fighter he always wanted to be?

EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE ALL AT ONCE

EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE ALL AT ONCE - With her laundromat teetering on the brink of failure and her marriage to wimpy husband Waymond on the rocks, overworked Evelyn Wang struggles to cope with everything, including a tattered relationship with her judgmental father and daughter. And as if facing a gloomy midlife crisis wasn't enough, Evelyn must brace herself up for an unpleasant meeting with an impersonal bureaucrat: Deirdre, the shabbily dressed IRS auditor. However, as the stern agent loses patience, an inexplicable multiverse rift becomes an eye-opening exploration of parallel realities. Will Evelyn jump down the rabbit hole? But how many stars are in the universe? Can weary Evelyn fathom the irrepressible force of possibilities, tap into newfound powers, and prevent an evil entity from destroying the thin, countless layers of the unseen world?

As a rebel against the machines, Neo must confront the agents: super-powerful computer programs devoted to stopping Neo and the entire human rebellion.

Avatar

AVATAR - When his brother is killed in a robbery, paraplegic Marine Jake Sully decides to take his place in a mission on the distant world of Pandora. In exchange for the spinal surgery that will fix his legs, Jake gathers knowledge, of the Indigenous Race and their Culture, for the cooperating military unit spearheaded by gung-ho Colonel Quaritch, while simultaneously attempting to infiltrate the Na'vi people with the use of an "avatar" identity. While Jake begins to bond with the native tribe and quickly falls in love with the beautiful alien Neytiri, the restless Colonel moves forward with his ruthless extermination tactics, forcing the soldier to take a stand - and fight back in an epic battle for the fate of Pandora.
